Pet Immunization

Prevention is Key to Wellness

KittensWe recommend that all kittens and puppies begin their immunizations between 6 and 8 weeks of age followed by a series of boosters given about 3 to 4 weeks apart until they are 3 to 4 months old. Adults should be vaccinated annually.

Rabies: is a very serious and most always a 100% fatal disease caused by a virus which affects both cats and dogs. It can also be spread from animals to humans by a bite or a lick to someone on the mouth, nose or broken skin. Rabies is preventable with vaccinations as early as 2 months of age and yearly boosters. Texas law requires that all cats and dogs be vaccinated by a licensed veterinarian by 4 months of age against rabies. When pets travel with you, it’s important that you have their rabies vaccination certificate in your possession.

Heartworm Disease: All dogs and cats are susceptible to heartworm infection which is spread by mosquitoes. This is a serious and potentially fatal disease that is almost 100% preventable. A blood test is necessary before beginning a prevention program and should be repeated annually to ensure adequate medication.

Common diseases affecting cats that can be prevented with vaccinations:

* Feline Panleukopenia or Feline Distemper (FPV), a highly contagious and life-threatening viral disease and vaccination is the best preventative available.
* Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) or Feline AIDS, affects the immune system which can lead to a variety of serious recurrent illnesses, eye diseases, dental issues, various cancers, and wasting.
* Feline Leukemia (feLV), a contagious disease which weakens the immune system and can cause anemia, inflammation of the nose, mouth and eyes, and certain types of cancer.
* Feline Calicivirus, a common contagious respiratory disease which can cause pneumonia, lameness, and ulcerations of the mouth.
* Feline Herpesvirus Infection, (not the same strain that humans carry) is a highly contagious disease which can cause a watery nose and eyes, sneezing, fever, serious eyes conditions and upper respiratory congestion. Feline Herpes isn’t transmittable to humans and dogs.

Common diseases affecting dogs that can be prevented with vaccinations:

* Canine Parvovirus also known as Parvo, a highly contagious and terrible disease affecting the gastrointestinal tract which is often fatal. Immunization is crucial especially in young puppies.
* Canine Distemper, a highly contagious and often fatal disease which attacks the nervous system.
* Bordetellosis also know as Kennel Cough, is commonly contracted from other dogs and can lead to pneumonia and death.
* Lyme Disease, transmitted primarily by deer ticks seriously affects both animals and humans.
* Enteric Coronavirus, is a highly contagious intestinal disease. Young puppies are especially vulnerable and should be vaccinated at about 9 to 12 weeks of age.
* Canine Adenovirus-2 and Canine Parainfluenza, are viruses that commonly cause Kennel Cough.
* Leptospirosis, caused by a spirochete organism found in soil and water and which can be spread from animals to humans. It can cause bleeding disorders, fluid retention in the legs, chest or abdomen, difficulty breathing, and kidney or liver failure.
* Canine Influenza, is a highly contagious virus among dogs with some strains contagious also to cats.

Consider the Crotalus Atrox Toxoid vaccine if your dog frequents rattlesnake habitat. This vaccine is most effective against the venom of the Western Diamondback Rattlesnake. The initial vaccination should be followed by a booster in about a month and then an annual booster. For dogs at high risk, it may be necessary to booster 3 doses per year 4 months apart.

The price of vaccinations is very small compared to the cost of treating a pet with one or more of the above contracted medical conditions. Please spare your pets the pain and suffering from these common infectious diseases by having them vaccinated.
